Extracurricular Activities - Introduction
Extracurricular Activities
Children have opportunities to participate in a wide range of interschool sports, sport teams,
music tuition, Dutch language tuition, choir, dance group, school orchestra and ukulele as well as helping out at school
as student leaders.
Details of all these activities can be found in our school newsletters, in direct communication from the program coordinators and via this website.
The children have opportunities to participate in a School Musical Production and an Art Exhibition (alternate years), Northern Bay Performing Arts Festival,
APPA Choir Festival and special school-wide programs such as Science Fairs, book parades and cultural festivals.
Lunchtime Story Sessions
Lunchtime story sessions are held in the library most Wednesdays, beginning at 12.45. This is an opportunity for teachers to share new books, and old favourites
as well, with the children. It is also a time when children get to know teachers they don’t usually meet and vice versa. The new amphitheatre makes a perfect venue
for this, allowing the children to relax and enjoy great stories in warm, bright comfortable surroundings.
Dance Group
Dance group during 2011 will be held in the hall, every Thursday lunchtime straight after lunch.
During Term 1 Mrs Grayson, our dance teacher, will be working with junior children who are enthusiastic about dance and willing to commit to practice every week. We will be working towards a group dance to be performed later in the term.
Each term new opportunities will be offered to different levels of the school. Mrs Grayson gets a lot of response to these groups and all children are welcome, but you will need to be keen and committed to turn up regularly to practices. If you are interested in joining please see Mrs Grayson and listen for announcements at the beginning of each term. We have lots of fun and it is a great opportunity to perform in front of your peers and family. See you there!
Dutch Language Tuition
Teaching Dutch language and culture at Long Bay Primary is unique, as we have the
privilege to teach during school time on Monday afternoon from 1.30 till 2.45 pm.
The class started in term 2, 2010 and currently we have 12 children attending. Our classes are open for all primary-aged children with a Dutch background.
Sabine Berkman, director of the Dutch Language School in Auckland, has been teaching Dutch in New Zealand for the past 16 years and is very excited about this great
opportunity. The class is recognised by the Dutch Ministry of Education, and provides us with a government funding. Because of the financial help we receive, we can
keep the costs for the parents down to $50 a term.
