Akonui Syndicate

Our Year 5 and 6 students belong to the Akonui syndicate.
The name Akonui means ‘big learning' and stems from the Maori words ‘ako' or learning and ‘nui' meaning big.

We have an 'open door' policy at our school. This means you are always welcome to pop down and see us if you have any queries or concerns. If we are not immediately available, we will arrange a mutual convenient time to talk with you.

Akonui class teachers have set up websites for you to keep up with our learning and programmes. These can be accessed by here or on the room number of each teacher listed below.

Julie Butler

Teacher Room 14

Julie Butler has been a member of the Long Bay Primary staff since 1996. She is part of the local community and enjoys meeting past and present pupils and their parents at the local beaches and shops. She has lived in Torbay for the last twenty years. She has three children who have all attended Long Bay Primary.

Julie is the SENCO ( Special Education Needs Coordinator) for Long Bay Primary and takes responsibility for managing the special needs in the school. She works with class teachers, teacher aides, parents, support agencies and children. She finds it rewarding to see children make progress and achieve.

Lianne Swann
Teacher Room 13

Lianne Swann is a lively member of the staff who believes in high expectations and helping students to set achievable goals towards their learning. She has a passion for Literacy and the Visual Arts. Lianne completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Education in 2010. Her focus of study included Literacy, the Visual Arts, mentoring teachers and issues surrounding Assessment.

Lianne is a keen traveller and has visited many parts of South East Asia. Lianne lives in Albany with her husband. She is fond of animals and enjoys walking her minature schanuzer on the beach. She is a keen reader, believes in keeping as fit as possible and loves getting out in the garden.

Diane Edgoose
Teacher Room 16

Diane has worked at Long Bay since 2005. She has spent time teaching in both Akonui and Akoranga. She has a love for teaching children and enjoys being a part of children achieving in different areas.

Diane has been teaching for 15 years. She has a Bachelor of Education and a Diploma of Teaching. She started her career teaching at Mt Roskill Primary, then moved on to Long Bay. She has a love of sport and numeracy.

Diane loves spending time with her husband James and their children, Jake and Emma.

Daniel Oades
Teacher Room 15
ICT coordinator

Daniel joined Long Bay Primary after completing a Bachelor of Education at the University of Auckland. He is teaching a Year 5 and 6 class in the Akonui syndicate in 2012.

Before studying Daniel worked for the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, travelled throughout Europe and Nepal, and worked in telecommunications. He is married with two gorgeous children.

Daniel has a special interest in science and the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) as a tool for teaching. He enjoys sharing his love of music and drama with his students.
