Kia ora Parents/Caregivers
As children my parents decided to plant a tree for my brother and I. Keith got a Queensland Kauri (agathis robusta) and I planted a Five Finger (neopanax arboreus). Of course the Kauri grew like a weed, has been topped at least three times and is about 10m tall. My tree is about 2m high by comparison. My parents are still in the same house that we grew up in and our trees continue to flourish.
Leaving a legacy is something that everyone enjoys. We are giving the opportunity for all of the 5 year old students who start at our school to leave something here to remember their time at Long Bay Primary. In conjunction with Kings Plant Barn Silverdale we will be planting a tree with each of our new Year 0 and 1 students when they arrive at school. In time these trees will grow and flourish and when they return as adults they will be able to look back on the time they spent here with pride and know they left a part of themselves here for others to enjoy.
We are starting this tradition with our next group of students who join us on Tuesday 4 June. The trees are ready for them to plant and we will invite their families and class along to share the event with them.
Unfortunately Kings Plant Barn are unable to support all of our existing students to also leave their mark. However we do have a plan to cover that. On Saturday 22 June at 2:00pm we are holding a planting event where families are welcome to join us to plant trees. If you would like to join us on the day we have arranged with Awa Nurseries in Waimauku to purchase trees through them. You will find the opportunity on the Long Bay Primary Kindo Shop to buy a tree (or trees) to plant on behalf of your children or family. If you do this we will have your tree(s) here waiting for you on the day to plant.
With the felling of the library tree last year following Cyclone Gabrielle it is exciting to start this project to not only leave a legacy for future generations, but also to attempt to replace what has been cut down.
My parents will celebrate 50 years in the same house next month. Their back garden has seen many games of cricket and go-home-stay-home or spotlight over the years, most of them with our trees looking down on us. We look forward to Long Bay Primary students being able to enjoy playing in our environment for many years to come as we move closer to celebrate our own 50th Anniversary as a school.

It is with great reluctance that we have accepted the resignation of Ankeli Lewis as a teacher at Long Bay Primary. Ankeli and her husband Callum are moving to Whangarei to pursue new opportunities, and no doubt some great outdoor time in the winterless north. We have appointed Irene Hayakawa to teach Room 27 In her place and look forward to welcoming Irene back to Long Bay Primary in this role at the start of Term 3.
