Kia ora Parents/Caregivers
Working at a school there are a lot of things we try to achieve with and for you and your children. It is a bit like an onion – many layers and when you peel one off the next one is revealed and ready to be challenged.
Somewhere in the middle of our onion are the core components of reading, writing and mathematics. We have been working on how to deliver the reading and writing part of the onion with a structured literacy approach for the last few years. In 2024 our Year 0 to 3 teachers had further intensive professional learning in this area and by the end of this term all of our Year 4 to 6 teachers will have had the same experience.
There is a focus on reading, but also writing and spelling. You can’t have one without the other as they come in a package. One of our next challenges is helping you to understand what it is all about and why some things your children are doing now might look different to their older siblings, or how you learnt to read at school. A place to begin is by watching this podcast featuring Carla McNeil from Learning Matters and Liz Kane from Liz Kane Literacy. Carla and Liz explain what structured literacy is, and isn’t and where this approach is coming from.
At Long Bay Primary we are using Liz Kane Literacy as our resource and professional learning provider. We will share more about the changes to the curriculum as they happen. This podcast is a great place to begin your learning journey.
If there is anyone out there with a foolproof method on how to peel an onion without it making me cry please let me know – I am always willing to learn something new from an expert.

Parking In and Around Long Bay Primary School
|
Please do not use Long Bay College to park and wait for your child(ren) – unless you also have a child at Long Bay College. While we appreciate that parking is at a premium in the local area, Ashley Reserve is the best option if you do not want to join the queue down Ralph Eagles Place.
