Kia ora Parents/Caregivers
The ZX81 was the first computer we owned as a family. From memory it had a few games and it was totally amazing. It was launched on March 5 1981 and recently turned 44 years old. Sadly, I do not have it – I imagine that original computer would now be worth much more than what my Dad paid for it.
Computers have moved a very long way since then and we now have the internet that is literally everywhere. Back in the day you could play games to your heart’s content and it was only you – or your brother on the other side of the keyboard. Times have changed.
On Wednesday 26 March at 7.00pm the Oneroa Kāhui Ako (collection of seven local schools) is hosting Rob Cope at Northcross Intermediate School in their Performing Arts Centre. Rob is a filmmaker, author, speaker and will give us an eye opening talk about online safety. This event is open to all of the parents at Long Bay Primary and I urge you to attend. You can follow this link to secure your tickets before they run out.
Rob comes to us highly recommended by other North Shore schools who have engaged him to speak. Earlier in the day he will address our staff as well as the other six schools that make up our group.
My parents did not have to worry about what my brother and I were doing online, who we were talking to or what we were seeing – there was nothing to see. Today things are vastly different and as a parent of a 16 year old I can assure you that I wish I had known some of the things that Rob is going to speak about when he was growing up.
Wednesday night will be a two hour investment in your child’s future that you will not regret.
Meanwhile I found a ZX81 for sale on eBay for only $128.63 plus postage – a bargain! The question I am left with is does it work, and just how great were those games? Maybe I should leave it as a nostalgic memory after all.
See you next Wednesday.

Parking In and Around Long Bay Primary School
|
Please do not use Long Bay College to park and wait for your child(ren) – unless you also have a child at Long Bay College. While we appreciate that parking is at a premium in the local area, Ashley Reserve is the best option if you do not want to join the queue down Ralph Eagles Place.
