Kia ora Parents/Caregivers
There is no doubt that this Book Week has been the most spectacular that I have experienced since arriving at Long Bay Primary School. We have gone from COVID-19 forcing the Library to be used as a classroom to the visual extravaganza that we have this week.
Thanks to the vision and creative genius of Fenneke Gingell, Lliam and Shirley Carran and their team of assistants the Library has been transformed into a scene from Where the Wild Things Are – with our very own boat!
At a meeting of local Principals this week we were asked to share a celebration of something that we were excited about at our schools. I showed the photo below – a thriving, living Library full of fun, reading and plenty of noise.
Our students have been engaged in a wide range of reading activities, challenges and experiences both inside and outside the Library across the week. A perfect example of making learning ‘come alive’ and give it purpose for our students.
As Book Week wraps up we can look back on a successful event – there has been a lot of ‘stop, drop and read’ going on for the last 5 days. No matter how many screens our students are surrounded with these days, the number of Long Bay Primary students walking around with their heads in a book warms the heart.
Long may it continue.

Last Friday we had many teachers unwell and away from school. We insist if they are sick that they stay away until they are feeling better and will not spread what they have to others. I would like to ask you to do the same. If your child is sick please keep them away from school until they are feeling better. I totally understand we are also sending out messages about how important it is to attend school. That is also true. However it is more important that sick people stay away from such a well populated environment to avoid making others sick as well. Your help in this matter is greatly appreciated. If your child is unwell at school we will contact you to ask they are collected and remain home until they are better.

The speed limits are changing in the streets around Long Bay Primary sometime during the week of June 3 to 7. The Ministry of Transport has approved the Land Transport Rule: Setting of Speed Limit 2024.
This updated Rule requires Auckland Transport to reverse the permanent 30km per hour speed limits introduced around our school.
Speed limits are changing on around 1,500 Auckland roads. Please keep an eye out for new speed limit signs. For more information please click here.

The sign is up and we are on the final stretch of this project. The last thing we are waiting for is the control system for the new gate. In theory this should be all up and running by the end of next week. We are also painting the crossing across the driveway into the school to make it stand out. Please ensure you continue to use this to enter the school rather than cut corners – it will help to keep all of our students (and yourselves) safe.

Badminton Our two Y5/Y6 badminton teams attended the Primary Schools Badminton Competiton on Wednesday 28 May. Both teams were originally entered in Division 2 but due to not enough teams in Division 1 North Harbour Badminton ran a qualification round first for all teams. Both teams had easy wins in their qualification round and were promoted to Division 1. Division 1 was tough but they gave it their all, making the opposition work for every point! The teams should be very proud of their achievement!
