Term 2, Week 7 – Friday 13 June 2025

Kia ora Parents/Caregivers
It was not a surprise to me yesterday to see a school in Auckland closing early due to the lack of staff – both teachers at the school and also relief cover. We have been struggling over the past couple of weeks ourselves. At this stage we have been able to keep a teacher in each class, however it has been a challenge.
I am acutely aware that the message going home has been just how important it is to be at school. I do however have a plea, if your child is sick please keep them home.
Our recent ERO report highlighted our student attendance level during Term 2 last year being below expectation. I explained to our ERO partners who came to visit that it was no surprise, given the number of staff we had away during the same period last year. 2025 is even worse.
This week we have engaged relievers to cover relievers for sick teachers – effectively onto our third teacher to cover a class. The reliever pool is very small at this time of the year and will only get smaller as teachers pick up new entrant positions for the rest of the year. By keeping your child away from school if they are sick it will prevent them spreading whatever is ailing them to the other members of the class and potentially the school staff.
The good news is the upcoming holiday will act as a circuit breaker. It will be a chance for everyone to get better and return to school refreshed and ready for Term 3.
Thank you for helping us out – we really do appreciate it. Now if we can just organise a fine and sunny day next Tuesday for our Cross Country it will be a real bonus.

Reporting Update and Parent/Teacher Interviews
|
During 2025 you will notice some changes to our school reports. Key elements remain – a general comment about your child and how they work at school, next steps for their learning, and information about the level they are working at in the curriculum. Differences include reports being available through Hero, they are able to be printed directly from your phone or computer if you would like a hard copy.
We are using learning objectives directly from the curriculum (with some ‘educational’ wording) for our next steps. Progress reporting will be against how well your child can do compared to their year level expectations, rather than a curriculum level as it was in the past. We will provide further information over the next week along with the opportunity to reserve a time to speak to your class teacher about your child and their progress at your upcoming interview evenings on 25 and 26 June.
Mid Year Progress Reports will be available to you on Thursday 19 June via the Hero app. We will let you know when they are ‘live’.
Please go to School Bookings in the Hero app to make a Mid Year Parent/Teacher Interview. Bookings are OPEN now and will CLOSE on Wednesday 24 June. Interviews for Rooms 10 and 18 will take place in Term 3.

In conjunction with Long Bay College we have been working with AT for the past several months around the changes that are being made to the speed limits outside our schools. Unfortunately they erected signs with incorrect timing on them. The current times will be changed to reflect a safer window of time for the students across both schools. This should be completed next week (we are at the top of the list).
Until then I ask you to remind your children to be extra vigilant on their way to and from school while these changes take effect. The new times for the 30km/h speed limit will be 8:00am to 9:30 am and 2:40pm to 4:00pm. The electronic signs as well as the fixed ones will display the same speed limit when this change occurs. For more information please click here.

We continue to wait for the control system for the new gate to be installed. The repainting of the crossing across the driveway into the school is finished. Please ensure you continue to use this to enter the school rather than cut corners – it will help to keep all of our students (and yourselves) safe.
