Principal’s Chat

Kia ora everyone

We are certainly enjoying the beautiful autumn weather this week –  our Year 6 students Waterwise session was able to go ahead at Waiaike Beach, and our enviro group (now renamed by the students as Kaitiaki Kakariki) took on the challenge of digging deep holes to plant pohutakawa trees.

Senior Constable Wansink has also been back at school to talk to the children about crossing the road safely.  In that regard, there is a current concern that some children are crossing at the top of Ralph Eagles Place, rather than using the school pedestrian crossing. There is no official crossing at the top of the hill as it is in a dangerous location, being right on the corner. If your child walks or rides home and goes past the college, can you please check with them that they are crossing down by our school.

The school Parent Teacher Association has started the year with great ideas to bring our community together – this term they have organised a special movie night on 9 April. The tickets to this fun family event will be limited, so do read through this newsletter to find out more.
There is also a Bakers Delight Hot Cross Bun fundraiser, with orders closing on 29 March so the deliveries will be here for Easter.

Do remember that we have a Teacher Only Day next Thursday 1 April (Kelly Club will be open) and then school is closed for the Easter break, starting back on Wednesday 7 April. A great chance to recharge with your lovely kids!

Have a great fortnight

Important School Reminders

Assemblies

Our full school assemblies are now each fortnight. This term there will be less due to lockdowns and Easter. All family members are welcome at the full school assembly, and the dates for these are in the newsletter and on the website calendar (next full school assembly is 16 April).

As our school has grown so much, we are now handing out the children’s certificates at their team assemblies, rather than at the full school assembly. The team assemblies are at different times during the school day to fit in with each team’s timetable. Teachers are taking photos of the children receiving their certificate and will put these on to Seesaw.
If you are not yet connected to your child’s class Seesaw, do contact the class teacher.

Absence from School

If your child is going to be absent from school, please email admin@longbayprimary.ac.nz or call 09 473 6077, option 2 and advise the Office to avoid your child being marked as truant.

If your child arrives late to school, they MUST call at the Office window for a late pass. This is so we know they are safe.

If you are collecting your child early from school, all parents/caregives need to sign them out at the Office. Children are not allowed to leave school grounds early unless they are signed out. Where possible, please do not arrange to collect a child during break times, as it is extremely difficult to locate them. Morning tea is 11.15am to 11.45am and lunch is 1.15pm and 2.00pm.

School Adventure Playground

Please remember that the playground is out of bounds for all students before school.  Children who are accompanied by their parent may play on the playground after school and on the weekends. Children cannot stay and play on the playground after school unless their parent is with them.

Before and After School Care – Kelly Club

Kelly Club is available at Long Bay Primary from 7.00am until 6.00pm in the afternoon.  Please contact Kelly Club on 027 363 3329 or at longbay@kellyclub.co.nz if you have any enquiries or wish to make a booking.  Kelly Club will be using the hall and Room 4 for Before and After School Care this year.

Activity Charges and School Donations

This is a reminder that the school activities charge is due for payment. If you haven’t already done so, could you please make the $75.00 payment per child to the school bank account:

12-3080-0105403-00 (use your child’s name as the reference)

Receipts for school donations and activity charges will be sent out by email at the end of March. Thank you to those families who have already made payment.

Bakers Delight School Fundraiser – Wednesday 31 March

Long Bay Primary has the opportunity of a fundraiser with Bakers Delight in Pinehill.  Please place your order via LBP Shop/Kindo. All orders will be delivered before lunchtime on Wednesday 31 March. The single buns will come in a folded paper bag and the 6 pack in a plastic bag.  They will be labelled with child’s name and room number. Orders close on Monday 29 March at 6.00pm.

Sports Buzz, Week 8

The school swimming sports for students in Years 4-6 took place recently. Congratulations to all the students who received certificates. Many thanks to the parent helpers on the day, your support is appreciated.

Road Safety

Senior Constable Wansink conducted road crossing safety training to our students. They were encouraged to stop, look and listen, practicing good road safety.

Please always use the pedestrian crossing by the school, and ensure your children are not crossing at the top of Ralph Eagles Place by the round-about.

Message from the Ministry of Education regarding the Covid 19 Vaccination Programme

As you will be aware, COVID-19 vaccinations have begun for border and managed isolation and quarantine (MIQ) workers and their households, as part of the Government’s sequenced vaccination plan.

While more than 9000 of our most at-risk border and frontline workers have received their first dose of the vaccine, the programme is still in its infancy and vaccines will become available in stages. Therefore, the large majority of New Zealanders won’t be able to be vaccinated until the second half of this year.

The next group offered the opportunity to be vaccinated will be 50,000 family and household contacts of the border workforces in our main centres and after that, non-border frontline health workers.

Further information regarding the vaccination plan can be found on the Ministry of Health website.

Scams and misinformation
With the Government’s vaccine programme now underway, it’s important that New Zealanders receive accurate information from credible sources.

Unfortunately, both misinformation and disinformation are being spread and CERT NZ is working closely with other government agencies to try to stop these scams in their tracks.
