Principal’s Chat

Kia ora Parents/Caregivers

As I sloshed through the water yesterday trying to keep what was left of my dignity intact a small voice next to me said “This is the funnest fun run of my life”. Despite the fact this was also the first fun run of his life it only reinforced to me why we were out there. The truth is it was fun, not something that many other urban schools will have the opportunity to experience. That it has rained since November certainly helped – the muddiest event on record by all accounts.

I would like to acknowledge our sponsors who helped us out – Kristin School provided the sausages, New World Long Bay the milk, Nestle New Zealand the hot chocolate, Harbour Sport the cargo net (sorry it is a bit dirtier on the way back than it was on the way here) and Susan Kinghorn from Harcourts Cooper and Co with the coffee truck. They all added to the carnival atmosphere and we are very grateful for their assistance.

Then there are the people who donated their time. The PTA and Friends of the PTA who helped with many, many, many litres of Milo and alongside our very own grill master Keogan cooked and distributed 600 sausages. All of you who came along to support, cheer, clean, dry and dress your children. Then there were the staff. Some covered from head to toe in mud, others in colour or water. There were also the dedicated few who joined in to support the children in their class or put on their gumboots and encouraged their children to keep going. No teacher’s job description that I have ever seen has these things in them, however out there they were.

I think the day was best summed up by another conversation I had. “This day is amazing. It has a carnival atmosphere and the vibe is amazing”. It really was true, we ran, dodged and waded then washed down, drank and ate. Not a ‘normal’ school day, but the type of event that joins us together as a community.

It would be remiss of me to conclude without mentioning the staggering amount of money we were able to raise along the way. As a community you gave us money to help with some key pieces of infrastructure that we desperately need, and we gave back an experience for your children that they will remember long after the day ends. We are very grateful for your generosity. We all got something out of it, memories that last and sadly a video blooper that seems to have leaked.

As we wrap up Te Wiki o te Reo Māori this whakataukī sums it up best:

Ehara täku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini

My strength is not as an individual, but as a collective

Mathex Competition

Last Thursday we had Mathex competitions in the hall. Each class had one or two teams of four, solving mathematics problems and competing against each other to answer their 10 questions.  Classes supported their teams and a great time was had by all. Thanks to the Year 5 and 6 mathematics extension students who helped organise and run the day and judge.

Here are the winning teams from the Mathex competition:

Kowhai – R6
Rimu R8
Pohutukawa Y3 R18 team 1
Pohutukawa Y4 R20 team 1
Totara/Kauri Y5 – Room 24
Totara/Kauri Y6 – Room 15

Tōtara Visit from Erica Stanford

Today Tōtara had a special visitor to support their elections unit.

Erica spoke to our tamariki about her job and her roles in Education and Immigration. Students asked interesting questions from the progress on Glenvar Road to climate change.

Thank you Erica for coming to speak to us!

Room 6

In Room 6 we have been learning about New Zealand native trees. We discovered some interesting facts about the Rimu tree. Did you know, Rimu means ‘seaweed’ because it has fine leaves that droop like seaweed? Also, the Rimu tree can live for more than 1,000 years and the wood was used by Maori for weapons, tools and building waka (canoes). Three of our students visited each classroom to share and present what we had learned about the Rimu tree.
