Principal’s Chat

Kia ora Parents/Caregivers

A couple of weeks ago the PTA hosted a quiz night in the school hall. It was well attended and one of the items up for auction was the opportunity to be Principal for the day. At one stage I contemplated bidding for it myself – then giving myself the day off. However in the end it went to very worthy (and capable recipients).

Ollie, Jacob and Theo were given the challenge – could they handle being Principal for the day? We put this theory to the test on Monday with a day of hard work, fun and rewarding experiences.

Of course I planned out the day in detail, starting at the school gate in the morning, moving on to class visits, making our Principal badges and a comprehensive proposal to the school Board about something important at the school they would like to change. There was a full day planned including contributing to this newsletter. As it seems with this job what we plan and reality are somewhat different.

I did manage to ask the boys what they enjoyed the most about the day, and what they thought the job involved.

What did you enjoy?

Theo – reading to classes of children because I like reading and they listened well

Jacob – handing out certificates because the people getting certificates were happy

Ollie – I got to walk outside, not do school work and hand out certificates to people

What does the job involve?

Ollie – paying the bills and handing out late passes (which was great fun)

Jacob – writing reports

Theo – writing certificates

It turns out they liked the bits I also enjoy – dealing with people and especially the students, it is the reason why planning too far ahead can be a challenge, you never know what is coming up next. The boys rose to the challenge and went beyond, especially when reading to Kōwhai and presenting certificates to students across the school for being awesome.

At the end of the day they left to go and play touch – I have no idea where they got the energy from. I left to sit in front of the TV and recover.

Next time I am definitely going to open my wallet and secure that day off.

Enrolment Information for 2024

We are planning for 2024 and what things will look like at Long Bay Primary. As part of our planning the number of students that will be here is the most important piece of information we have.

If you have a child turning 5 during 2024, or know of anyone else who has a child and wants them to come to Long Bay Primary next year, please email the Enrolments Officer at enrolments@longbayprimary.ac.nz
All in zone children are guaranteed a place. All enrolments will need to be received by Friday 8 December in order to process a Term 1 2024 start.

Anyone who knows their child is leaving Long Bay Primary at the end of the year (and they are not in Year 6) we would value hearing about this as well. It helps with understanding how to balance our classes for next year.

Out of Zone Enrolments for 2024

We are not taking any out of zone enrolments for 2024 due to roll growth within our zone. If you move out of zone during the year and have a sibling due to start school in 2024 they are not automatically guaranteed a place at Long Bay Primary due to zoning regulations.

Access via Ashley Reserve Walkway

For any students who would like easy access to the Ashley Reserve carpark please meet the duty teacher at the playground sandpit when the 2.55pm bell goes and be escorted through the track. We hope this will assist to alleviate the traffic issues in Ralph Eagles Place so please encourage your children to use this walkway as an alternative to the drop-off/pick up zone. The gate is also open in the morning for students to arrive to school this way.

Swimming Programme in 2024

After an extensive consultation period we can confirm that we will continue to deliver a swimming programme at Northern Arena in 2024. This is a requirement as part of the New Zealand Curriculum and also vitality important for our children, especially as we are so close to the beach. We have contracted a new bus company that will take all of our students to the door of the centre. With Glenvar Road open again this will reduce the amount of travelling time that will be required. We have also secured an extra week of time at the pool enabling all lessons to start later in the day. With these enhancements to our programme we look forward to a successful experience in 2024.
