Principal’s Chat

Kia ora Parents/Caregivers

As my son grew up and The Wiggles vanished in the rear view mirror it became apparent that Arthur the Aardvark had taken over. Arthur’s friends and family can help him solve most life issues that crop up.

Somehow of course it seemed that I was always reading Arthur’s Teacher Trouble or Arthur goes to Camp. Even now just typing the names of those books brings back flashbacks of Mr Ratburn (Arthur’s teacher) and the perils of spelling tests.

At the end of the day, no matter how many times I read the same books, I really didn’t mind. The value of not only sharing time but also the love of reading with your children is something that is invaluable. Now my son Nathan is 15, and given the range of entertainment that is available via screens, I can only think of a couple of series of books that I have recently purchased that he has been interested in. It was amazing how exciting it was when the thought of him wanting to read a book made me feel.

As we have enjoyed Book Week, culminating today with our parade in the Hall I can only look back on those opportunities to read to my own child with fondness. Please keep it going as long as you can. From experience as they get older interests change, however the time spent reading early on and often is worth it for both of you.

It turned out that Mr Ratburn had the best interests of his class in mind, and without giving too much away, Arthur finally realised that too. Please take that well read book off the shelf at home and read it together tonight as Book Week comes to an end. You won’t regret it. In fact I will take my own advice, I am looking forward to it more than I would have expected.

Enrolment Information for 2024

We are planning for 2024 and what things will look like at Long Bay Primary. As part of our planning the number of students that will be here is the most important piece of information we have.

If you have a child turning 5 during 2024, or know of anyone else who has a child and wants them to come to Long Bay Primary next year, please email the Enrolments Officer at enrolments@longbayprimary.ac.nz
All in zone children are guaranteed a place. All enrolments will need to be received by Friday 8 December in order to process a Term 1 2024 start.

Anyone who knows their child is leaving Long Bay Primary at the end of the year (and they are not in Year 6) we would value hearing about this as well. It helps with understanding how to balance our classes for next year.

Out of Zone Enrolments for 2024

We are not taking any out of zone enrolments for 2024 due to roll growth within our zone. If you move out of zone during the year and have a sibling due to start school in 2024 they are not automatically guaranteed a place at Long Bay Primary due to zoning regulations.

Access via Ashley Reserve Walkway

For any students who would like easy access to the Ashley Reserve carpark please make your way along the walkway we have created. We hope this will assist to alleviate the traffic issues in Ralph Eagles Place so please encourage your children to use this walkway as an alternative to the drop-off/pick up zone. The gate is also open in the morning for students to arrive to school this way.

Keep the PTA Going in 2024!
In order to keep the school events such as tonight’s disco running we are searching for parents to join the PTA.  Unfortunately due to not enough helpers, we had to cancel ice block day this term. We are down to only a few permanent members so without more support we won’t be able to keep up events such as family picnic evenings, donut days, quiz nights, movie nights, discos etc. If you can help please email longbayprimarypta@gmail.com or come to our last PTA planning session for the year on 5 December, 7.00pm at the staffroom. Hope to see some new faces there – all welcome!
