Kia ora Parents/Caregivers

Yesterday we enjoyed a spectacular day of athletic endeavour, AKA the Cross Country. I know that there are two cross country camps – a bit like beetroot. You either love it or loathe it, there is almost never a middle ground. Bringing together the whole school on the same day back at ‘home’ meant we could use our local environment to the fullest. Adding the space between us and Long Bay College into the mix just added to the adventure.

Along with the cheering, red faces, exhaustion and feelings of satisfaction there was also the opportunity to contribute to your house points tally, no matter your age or time getting around the course meant you contributed to the goal of winning the house cup. We look forward to sending our team off to the Northern Bays Cluster Cross Country in a few weeks ready to do us proud. Thanks to everyone who took part, Long Bay College for donating marshalls, the students and teachers who helped out and of course Mrs Nikki Douglas for organising a seamless event.

Speaking of beetroot I am not sure about you, however the most common time I eat beetroot is definitely in a hamburger. It turns out that beetroot was first introduced to hamburgers in Australia in the 1940’s. Of course what happens in Australia happens here and we are one of the other countries in the world with beetroot on our burgers. Subway used to be the place my son consumed his beetroot. However post Cyclone Gabrielle damage in Hawkes Bay has resulted in a lack of beetroot on the shelves in Australia and New Zealand. Fingers crossed full production is up and running again soon to add another vegetable to his diet.

For the record I am in the love it camp when it comes to beetroot.

Starting Our Legacy Ngahere

On Tuesday we started our new tradition, legacy tree planting for each 5 year old student who arrives at Long Bay Primary. Jeremy, Emily, Huxley and Haiyu started us off in style on Tuesday afternoon. We will aim to take the same photo in December 2029 and see how much the students (and trees) have grown while they were with us. A great memento for our 50th Anniversary celebrations.

Tree Planting Event – Saturday 22 June

On Saturday 22 June at 2.00pm we are providing the opportunity for our community to come together and start our project to support our new students planting trees as they start at Long Bay Primary. If you would like to purchase a tree or trees please go to the Long Bay Primary Kindo Shop and indicate what you would like to buy. We will have the plant waiting for you here on the day along with some fertiliser and a spot to plant it. You will need to bring along something to dig a hole with and your phone to take a photo of your work afterwards. Further details will be shared closer to the event.

Tree Orders close on Friday 14 June

Pasifika Cultural Week – 10-14 June

Next week we will be celebrating Pasifika Cultural Week at Long Bay Primary. We have some fantastic events happening during the week for our students:

– Representatives from each class will be making Lolly Lei and sharing the fruit burst necklaces with their classmates.
– We will have Pacific artefacts on display in Room 1.
– Our Pasifika parents and students will be making delicious Sapasui (Chop Suey) for their school friends to eat on Friday 14 June. We will end the week with a performance from our Pasifika Cultural Group at the school assembly. If you would like your child to try Sapasui (Chop Suey) on Friday 14 June.
Please complete the permission form below by Tuesday 11 June: Permission Form
Only children who have permission will be allowed to eat the Sapasui.

If you do not wish your child to be given two fruit bursts, please let their class teacher know before Monday 10 June. If you have any questions, please email lisal@longbayprimary.ac.nz

Sports Buzz – Term 2, Week 6

Rippa Rugby
Our Rippa teams attended their first tournament on Tuesday 4 June. The weather gods were kind and our students had a fabulous day. Some wins, some losses and lots of learning happened. Thank you to all the adults who were able to assist us!

Cross Country
The school cross country was run on Thursday 6 June in perfect conditions. Year 6 students were the first off and also the first to trial our new cross country course. It was great to be able to keep the run so local and allowed for many viewing (and cheering) spots. Our students had all set goals before race day and spot prize certificates will be handed out to those who teachers noticed were displaying resilience, or achieving their goals.

Students who placed in the top 3 will also be receiving certificates, and the top 6 placegetters in Years 4-6 will be attending the Northern Bays schools cross country at Long Bay Regional Park on Tuesday 25 June.

Many thanks to the team of student volunteers from Long Bay College who assisted us on the day. Also to those parents who were able to assist on the finish line, or support our students around the course.
