Term 1, Week 9 – Wednesday 27 March 2024

Principal’s Chat

Kia ora Parents/Caregivers

Tomorrow over 300 teachers from six of the schools in our Kāhui Ako will gather together at Long  Bay College for a conference. The theme is He Waka eke noa – We’re all in this together and it will be a great opportunity for us to all come together, hear from some inspirational speakers, share, and meet staff members from local schools.

If COVID-19 and the time we spent working online taught me anything, it was nothing beats face to face interactions. Schools and education hold an important place in our community and it is really important for us as educators to learn new things as well. Without the opportunities that days like tomorrow provide we will remain static in our thinking, actions and abilities.

Dr Melinda Webber will be our keynote speaker. She will address The Mana Model: Reconceptualising student success, thriving and wellbeing at school. Dr Webber is the author of the Mana Model that we use at Long Bay Primary as part of the Mitey Programme supporting student mental health. It will be great to hear directly from the architect of this key facet of the Mitey Programme what it is all about, and ask some questions as well.

We have staff members at all of the breakout sessions that follow finding out more about:

  • Poverty and Privilege
  • Te Oneroa Hikoi – Local places of Significance
  • Use of vocabulary in supporting English Language Learners
  • Supporting students with complex needs through structured literacy
  • Changing the lens on behaviour
  • Student Anxiety
  • Digital Practice and Artificial Intelligence and Large Language Models and their implications for classroom practice
  • Neurodiversity and Inclusivity
  • Hikoi Ki Te Taha (to walk alongside) Programme

I will personally attend sessions on changing the lens on behaviour and the use of vocabulary in supporting English Language Learners, two themes that are particularly relevant in education at the moment.

We look forward to taking the opportunity to put this new learning into practice in our classrooms during the rest of this year.

I would like to take the opportunity to wish you all a safe holiday break and look forward to coming back to school refreshed on Wednesday 4 April.
