Principal’s Chat

Kia ora Parents/Caregivers

As a child I had great visions of being a digger driver or a truck driver. It was great living at the end of a road where new houses were getting built, along with the many, many, many diggers that were being used.

Therefore it was exciting at the prospect a few years later to have an eight classroom block built here at Long Bay Primary to cater for the future roll growth as the suburb and school grows. After two years of work this building was due to go through the design process early this year, and then move on to actually building it. I was hoping to have a go on a digger if the opportunity arose.

Unfortunately we are on a list of 305 schools and 352 building projects that have been paused or cancelled by the Government. This means the planned block of classrooms will now not go ahead. There are obvious implications for us as a school going forward (my ride on a digger not being high on my list of concerns).

The good news is while this building was going to be built we were being given two classrooms to use for 18 months while the construction took place. These classrooms are still due to arrive (to become Room 26 and 27) however, they may be here for a longer time than previously expected.

With the growth of new houses within our school zone, and more development proposed we will continue to push our case for classrooms with the Ministry of Education before our roll grows too much further.

With some luck, good planning and persistence there is a good chance I might get my digger ride after all. Watch this space.

I would also like to take a moment to thank the students, parents and especially the teachers who have been involved with the Year 5 camps this week. A lot of planning goes into an event like this. The care and attention that was shown to the students who attended was outstanding. I am confident that they got a lot out of it and will have some great stories to tell their families over the coming days.

Please have a safe and relaxing holiday break and we look forward to welcoming everyone back on Monday April 29 refreshed and ready for more fun and some learning thrown in as well.
