Term 2, Week 8 – Friday 21 June 2024

Principal’s Chat

Kia ora Parents/Caregivers

I remember clearly bringing home my hand written primary school reports in an envelope. Waiting patiently for both parents to be in the same space and then the official opening process. To be fair it was usually a positive experience which I am sure helped.

With our Term 2 reports now written and ready to be shared with you next week the experience will be slightly different, however hopefully the end result will be similar. The piece of paper and handwriting are long gone, the communication about progress at school has not changed. Today however we do give you a much more comprehensive picture than my parents received. With Seesaw for a regular view into the classroom, interviews in the last week of the term to add a more personal touch and a much more comprehensive reporting system we all know what our students can or can’t do better than my parents and I did back then.

There is still however one piece of the puzzle that is missing, student voice. Seesaw does provide an opportunity for you to know exactly what your children think, feel and know, however there is nothing like a ‘live’ opportunity where you can ask questions and they can share to really keep you informed, and give them the chance to shine.

To that end we are introducing a new opportunity in 2024 at Long Bay Primary – Student Led Conferences. Mark this date in your calendar now – Wednesday 14 August. On this day you will come to school with your child. Sit with them in the classroom and listen to them talk about what they can do and where they are going next with their learning. Show you where they are at and challenge you to see what you know and can do as well. The teacher will be there, just in case, but the stars of the show will be your children. We will train them up (and you as well) over the first few weeks of Term 3 to ensure you all make the most of this opportunity.

It was only a few years ago that mum had an extensive clean up and gave my brother and I our school reports back as a Christmas present. At the time when they came home it felt like the most important days of the year. Luckily these days we give you many more opportunities to be informed about your children’s learning and SLC day will be the icing on that cake. I for one can’t wait.

Return the soil around the tree to fill in the hole

Take a photo

If you are unable to make it on the day we will keep your tree safe until there is an opportunity to plant it.
Thank you for helping us to create a legacy that will remain for years to come.

Construction Update

The piles for the two new classrooms are almost complete and the temporary road has been constructed beside the school to enable crane and building access.

Today the team from Rhino Fencing built a temporary pathway across our courts and fenced it off. This will remain until after the trucks and crane leave next week. This fence will mean there is limited access to the school playground while it is up (there will be a gap in the middle to move to the other side of the courts). Please be aware this may create a tripping hazard, however it will be clearly marked by many cones.

After school on Monday 24 June the crane will arrive and be set up in the compound. Early Tuesday morning the two classrooms will arrive and when the sun is up they will be lifted into position. During this time there will be an exclusion zone established and no one will be allowed in the area.

Rooms 8, 9, 10, 12 and 15 will be off limits. We ask that students in these classes meet their teachers in the hall at the start of the school day. It is anticipated that the lifting will be complete by 9:00am. If this is not the case we will arrange an alternative programme for these classes until they are allowed to return to their rooms.

Access to Room 13 and 14 will be via the back of the school as these classrooms are not affected. We look forward to this phase of the process being completed and the new classrooms being operational in Term 3.

Kōwhai Story Telling Night

The Kōwhai team had a lovely story telling evening on Thursday where whānau gathered around a small campfire and shared a couple of cultural stories and sang songs. Kōwhai shared the story of Kupe and Te Wheke and we learnt about stories from Iran, Argentina, Bohemia, and Aotearoa. We had Mel Whaanga and his family join us, they are mana whenua of this area and we listened as he shared a story about the local area. A long time ago we didn’t have books and this was an opportunity for us to experience how knowledge and stories were shared in the past.
